This article analyzes Philip Roth’s American Pastoral. Building on the glove (the object the protagonist's business produces) as metaphor for the protagonist's assimilationist existence, it reflects on how the novel presents and then bends the formal features of the American Dream to represent the protagonist's failure to come to grips with the fallacy of the idea of the pastoral and of his own principles.
