The article is aimed at describing the development of “Coptic literature”. This is dealt with in its strict sense, as the corpus of literary works—almost exclusively religious in nature— written in the Coptic language between the end of the third century CE and the beginning of the twelfth century (with sporadic later artificial relics). These literary works are like the remains of a shipwreck, since they only represent a small part of a much larger production, having survived mainly in codices—often fragmentary and frequently of unknown origin— which, in most cases, were produced much later than the works they contain.
