According to a scientific article published in Nature, in 2020 the anthropogenic mass (the weight of that which humans have produced) has exceeded biomass, i.e. the weight of living matter. The calculation, however, does not include anthropogenic mass waste: if it were included, biomass would already have been exceeded by anthropogenic mass in 2013 (Elhacham et al., 2020). If the direct relationship between the production system and waste is blatant in the capitalist model, the cultural shift from 'waste' as an object to 'wasting relationships' – intended as the processes that systematically discard humans, communities and territories (Armiero, 2021) –, is less evident. Such themes can be found in the novel Única mirando al mar (1993) by writer Fernando Contreras Castro, which deals with a love story that unfolds in the landfill site of San José, Costa Rica. Through the tools provided by sociosemiotic analysis, the aim is to identify the meanings hidden behind the narrative signifiers, to perceive the profound criticism of a system that is now (schizophrenic and) uncontrollable and needs to constantly produce (human and non- human) waste necessary for its metabolism.
Secondo un articolo scientifico pubblicato sul Nature, nel 2020 la massa antropica (il peso di ciò che l’uomo ha prodotto) ha superato la biomassa, cioè il peso della materia vivente. Il calcolo, però, non comprende i rifiuti di massa antropogenica: se fossero inclusi, la biomassa sarebbe già stata superata dalla massa degli oggetti solidi prodotti dall’uomo nel 2013 (Elhacham et al., 2020). Se la relazione diretta tra sistema produttivo e scarti è lampante nel modello capitalistico, meno evidente è il passaggio culturale dal “rifiuto” inteso come oggetto alle “relazioni di scarto”, ovvero i processi che scartano sistematicamente umani, comunità e territori (Armiero, 2021). Tali tematiche sono ritrovabili nel romanzo Única mirando al mar (1993) dello scrittore Fernando Contreras Castro, che tratta di una storia d’amore che si sviluppa nella discarica di San José, Costa Rica. Attraverso gli strumenti forniti dall’analisi sociosemiotica, si vogliono identificare i significati nascosti dietro i significanti narrativi, sì da percepire la critica profonda ad un sistema ormai schizofrenico e incontrollabile, che ha bisogno di produrre costantemente scarti (umani e non) necessari al suo stesso metabolismo.
