Abstract The text seeks to frame the practice of transhumance within the specific disciplinary context of landscape planning. It offers a reflection on the changes that have occurred in the perception of the pastoral world among urban inhabitants. It briefly outlines the formation of current metropolitan regions, highlighting critical points of crisis and the development opportunities linked to new technologies. The text succinctly explores the relationships between lowland and mountain areas as conceptualized within disciplinary planning tools. It recalls the theoretical foundations of landscape planning. Furthermore, it summarizes the multidimensional characteristics inherent to the landscape of transhumance and attempts to define the concept of a transhumance landscape. Lastly, the text presents a map of transhumance routes in Italy, envisioning that, given their potential as green and blue infrastructure, they might serve as a framework of coherence for any future development strategies.
