In an increasingly urbanized world, intervention in existing cities has become the central issue in disciplinary debates, as the EU has stated in many documents aimed at sustainable development, in line with the UN 2030 SDGs. Within existing cities, the consolidated city occupies a strategic position in the complex balance of contemporary territories, a hinge between urban centers and metropolitanized areas. A compact territory extremely significant due to its extensive size and building stock, burdened by high density and lack of public spaces. This underlines the need for regeneration strategies that address not only physical aspects but also sustainability and livability. Proactively addressing these pathologies through regeneration strategy opens the possibility of imagining atypical spaces, as courtyards and rooftops, and uses, as shared green areas and temporary activities, in unconventional ways. The paper, structured into a section contextualizing the characteristics of the consolidated city and another explicating specific strategies, through a comparative analysis of case studies, aims to contribute to the debate by identifying references for innovation of urban planning system.
