Artificial Intelligence and Architecture. The Challenge This text examines the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and architecture during what has been aptly termed a "change of epoch". AI is transforming our design tools and fundamentally altering architectural creation's logical-scientific and artistic processes. The question is whether humans will guide technology or whether the technology itself is directing our creative processes. AI's ability to process vast quantities of data at extraordinary speeds presents both opportunities and challenges for architectural practice. While AI systems can generate design solutions, optimize resource utilization, and monitor building performance, they fundamentally lack the human capacity for emotional response, empathy, and creative uncertainty that drives genuine innovation. The essay argues that architecture emerges not merely from calculation but from human experience, including our anxieties, suffering, and emotional connections to place. The essay identifies several key challenges facing architecture in the digital age: how digital technology can support individual creativity while responding to collective needs; the potential of digital twins for project management; the new possibilities of construction enabled by technologies such as large-scale 3D printing; the design of virtual spaces; the ethical development of algorithms. The essay concludes that technology should remain grounded in human-centered reality and that our success depends on the capacity to build new humanism and aesthetics, creating spaces designed for human needs rather than confining us to a technological elsewhere disconnected from reality. The fundamental question remains whether we will domesticate AI or be domesticated by it.
