The chapter explores the architectural modeling of penitentiary facilities in Italy, emphasizing the neglected role of open spaces within prison environments. Traditionally, the focus has been on the built structures rather than the spaces between them, leading to poorquality outdoor areas that fail to support detainees’ well-being. Open spaces are often reduced to mere gaps between buildings and perimeter walls, devoid of meaningful design or amenities. The case study of Casal del Marmo exemplifies these issues while also presenting an opportunity for improvement.
