Thanks to a lost Greek inscription preserved only in an early sixteenth-century manuscript now in the Ottoboni collection, it was believed in the past that a presumed exarch of Italy by the name of Julianus held this position only for a few days or weeks in the spring of 589. However, a new reconstruction and interpretation of this inscription – which comes from the milieu of the Alexandrians living in the city of Rome and refers to their national church of St. Menas along the Via Ostiensis – provide us with an epigraphic text that seems easier to read and makes better sense. this revised text allows us to formulate new hypotheses regarding the context and individuals named in this document as well making possible further reflections on the ecclesiastical relations of Rome with Alexandria in Egypt at the end of the 6th century.
