The city of New York, conformed by a doctrine of congestion and expression of the fantastic that Koolhaas defines as Manhattanism', is a peculiar urban condition in which to intervene. Presenting the project for the Whitney Museum, in fact, Marcel Breuer, a leading exponent of the Bauhaus, wonders what a museum and, more specifically, a museum in Manhattan should represent and how it should stand to the New York context'. The controversial' Whitney, placed in multitude of exhibition epicentres (the Met, the MOMA and the Guggenheim), was inaugurated in 1966 in general dissent: an apparently impenetrable fortress different from commercial windows and shimmering skyscrapers.
