La tipologia del palazzo su portici di piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Roma - The typology of the palace on the porticoes of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Roma

In the aftermath of the unification of Italy, the need was felt to define an architectural-urban language that was the expression of a national style. The typology of the building on porticoes was thus considered the expression of an “Italian model” and was therefore adopted in the design of the new squares in Turin, Milan, Florence and also in Rome, despite this type being practically unknown. In this context, the survey of one of the porticoed facades that define Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is presented, the subject of one of the most impressive post-unification renovation projects in Rome. The objective is to document the current state and then investigate, through the analysis of shape and size, the compositional and ideational process underlying the building construction, in the belief that this knowledge constitutes the indispensable basis for setting up any valorization project.

All’indomani dell’unità d’Italia, si sentì l’esigenza di definire un linguaggio architettonico-urbano che fosse espressione di uno stile nazionale. La tipologia del palazzo su portici fu così ritenuta espressione di un “modello italiano” e perciò venne adottata nel progetto delle nuove piazze a Torino, Milano, Firenze ed anche a Roma, nonostante tale tipo fosse pressoché sconosciuto. In tale contesto è presentato il rilievo di una delle facciate su portici che definiscono Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, oggetto di uno dei più imponenti progetti di rinnovamento post-unitari a Roma. L’obiettivo è quello di documentarne lo stato di fatto per poi indagarne, attraverso l’analisi della forma e della dimensione, il processo compositivo e ideativo sotteso alla costruzione convinti che la tale complesso di conoscenze sia la base imprescindibile per impostare qualsiasi progetto di valorizzazione.
