This contribution intends to promote the knowledge of a building heritage that is peculiar to the Coquimbo region in Chile, linking the principles of architectural design and representation to the conservation of historical-artistic heritage, both tangible and intangible. The contribution aims to address the representation and communication of the vernacular earthen heritage, scattered in the rural Chilean areas of some localities in the province of Coquimbo. In particular, it analyses the patterns, tilings (tessellations), textures and weaves that characterise this ‘fragile’ heritage, seeking new ways of communicating the qualities of such earthen architecture. It is necessary, in fact, to convey the material, cultural and symbolic element that strongly distinguishes this decorated heritage. Its peculiar graphic vocabulary will therefore be analysed, to show hidden ancestral symbologies, linked to the world of the Diaguita, an indigenous population of the Coquimbo region, and to study the geometry of the collected patterns and tilings. This analysis may offer new scenarios and fields of experimentation for the representation and communication of the architectural qualities of a rural artefact decorated with peculiar geometric motifs, in full agreement with the key objectives of the ICAR/17-Drawing area.
