Our study examines the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in corporate governance, focusing on how AI technologies are transforming decision-making processes, risk mitigation strategies, and accountability mechanisms within corporate structures. Our paper aims to explore the academic literature on AI in corporate governance domains, identifying conceptual, social, and intellectual structures, and suggesting future research directions. Our research employs bibliometric analyses on a corpus of 122 academic articles from Scopus, applying performance analysis and science mapping to scrutinise scholarly contributions and identify thematic trends. Our findings reveal a significant impact of AI on corporate governance, with AI supporting or replacing human decision-makers, particularly within boards of directors, and influencing the evolution of modern corporate governance practices toward an ‘artificial governance’. We acknowledge the limitations in the scope of the literature reviewed, grounded on a single database and limited to articles and reviews and the potential for broader exploration of AI’s role in corporate governance. Our study highlights the need for firms to understand the interplay between AI technologies and corporate governance to navigate the changing landscape effectively. Our paper contributes original insights into the multifaceted impacts of AI on corporate governance, beyond operational efficiency and data analytics, and underscores the importance of further research in this transformative field.
