The chapter examines the Italian reactions to the election of John Paul II to the papacy. Within the profound global transformations that characterized the 1970s, the author highlights how for many observers Wojtyla's election put an end to the Church’s age-old Italo-centrism and presented the image of a strong, universal brand of Catholicism, a guide and response to contemporary anxieties as society became increasingly fragmented and unsure of its identity.
