This paper aims to relate Enrica Collotti Pischel’s research on Mao Zedong and his theoretical contributions to the ideological formulations developed by later leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, seen through the author’s assessment. With regard to the first aspect, the analysis focuses on Enrica’s interpretation of Mao as a ‘philosopher’, in his approach to dialectics in relation to socialist society. At the same time, the peculiarities of the Chinese road to socialism are also taken into account, as described in the text La rivoluzione ininterrotta. Sviluppi interni e prospettive internazionali della rivoluzione cinese (1962), which has been translated into other languages and received international acclaim. The essay continues with an investigation of the role of ideology in the Deng Xiaoping period, which was crucial in legitimizing economic reforms; then it moves on to the Xi Jinping era, which has seen a new emphasis on the doctrinal factor. In the last part, the prominent watchwords of contemporary nationalism, such as ‘trauma’ and ‘national humiliation’, are here related to the principles of proletarian internationalism of the Maoist age, to which Enrica devoted several studies.
