The area of study, characterized by 45% artificial surfaces, with mono-functional services and absence of meeting and gathering places, is marked by a significant presence of degraded naturalistic-environmental elements at the edges of the urbanized parts. The experimentation developed a model in which the design of green spaces constitutes the structuring framework of the regeneration strategy, defining the invariant basis for a new territorial arrangement. The experimentation followed a methodological structure articulated into phases: an initial phase of critical study of the territory by systemic components and a subsequent phase in which different solution scenarios were hypothesized for the issues identified in the analysed systems. The regenerative hypothesis for the environmental system that best satisfied some predetermined strategic objectives was subsequently chosen and was placed as a matrix in the elaboration of a regenerative settlement model. Abstract

In the general framework of the objectives set by Mission 2 “Green Revolution and Ecological Transition” of NRRP 2021, aimed at achieving «the green and ecological transition [...] to make the system sustainable and ensure its competitiveness, through [...] initiatives to counter hydrogeological instability, to safeguard and promote the biodiversity of the territory, and to ensure the security of supply and sustainable management of water resources», lies the contribution that presents the results of a project experimentation conducted on a territorial area of the City of Rome: the productive district of the “Tiburtina Valley”. Thus, a territorial subdivision into “Morphological Units” connected by a new mobility system was formulated. The regenerative model is characterized by functional mixité, greater recognizability of elements related to the figuration of the urban space (Lynch, 1960), and synergy among stakeholders interested in promoting local economic development.
