The paper focuses on the reconstruction projects for the city and the belfry of Faenza, after the destruction of the Second World War. Both the urban and the architectural plans were carried out by the “roman group” led by Vincenzo Fasolo, who adhered to Giovannoni’s scientific restoration and to the thinking of “ambientismo”. This case study highlights the evolution of the restoration discipline in Italy and Fasolo’s struggles in understanding and applying the new critical demands of conservation.
