Abstract
The article focuses on the image of the sea as a representation of God in Dante by providing a new analysis of its sources. Not only the «sea of being» by Gregory of Nazianzus, but also other sources are developed by Dante in a real system of images going from Paulus of Tarsus’ idea of universal motion of lives in God (Act. Ap. 27, 18: In ipso [Deo] vivimus, movemur et sumus > Dante, Par. I, 112-113: «onde si muovono a diversi porti / per lo gran mar dell’essere») to the Nicomachean Ethics, where Ulysses’ navigation symbolizes the moral virtue and its limits.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
