This contribution proposes a reflection, conducted in the light of recent historiographical trends, on the textual sources and archaeological evidence relating to the Islamic presence in Jerusalem in the first decades following the conquest, outlining the stages of the process leading to the recovery of the centrality of the Temple Mount and its religious resemantization, in parallel with the fundamental stages of the redefinition of the identity of the Community of the Believers.
