The S. Salvatore in Laterano Hospital represents a significant case related to the urban role in social welfare and health care of modern Roman complexes. Built on an area rich in ancient remains, the complex gained a unitary definition during the late seventeens century, when the 'hospital' as an establishment was changing from a recovery place for sick people and pilgrims to a scientific study and medical treatment institution. In this regard, throughout the eighteen century the Roman mile was involved in the construction and modification of certain hospital, designed by major figures of the architectural scene; some design -no all accomplished - were proposed for S. Salvatore, and are the basis for further exploration of the Rome of the Lateran institution.
