The French Revolution had a significant impact on the collective mentality towards religion, accelerating a process of diffusion of the values of secularism that, from the post-Enlightenment era to the contemporary one, led to a progressive reduction of the Church's sphere of influence on politics, culture and social life. While the production of sacred music experienced a period of gradual decline, there was a notable increase in instances of direct or indirect references to religious and spiritual themes in secular musical practices. The aim of this volume is to trace the potential interactions between secularisation and musical practices, thereby opening a space for reflection on these issues. The objective is not merely to monitor the decline of traditional forms of religious music, but primarily to ascertain how music has become a domain of action in which experiences, ideas, rituals and gestures that were, and in some cases remain, associated with religion and spirituality have gradually become integrated with secular practices. The book is divided into four sections, which traverse different spheres of experience and historical moments. The encounter with music provides a conduit through which spirituality can be translated into political action, shape identities and communities, convey ethical and social values, or finally explore the transcendent through the materiality of sound. The breadth of the time span is balanced by a clear delimitation of the musical and cultural scenarios, with all the essays focusing on repertoires of Western music in the written tradition and their interactions with forms of spirituality linked to the Christian religion, in its various confessions.

Abstract
The breadth of the time span is balanced by a clear delimitation of the musical and cultural scenarios, with all the essays focusing on repertoires of Western music in the written tradition and their interactions with forms of spirituality linked to the Christian religion, in its various confessions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
