On November 18th, 2023, the performance “eḫu išḫamai - Proposta di un metodo alternativo per la comunicazione della storia delle antiche civiltà” took place at the Italian Cultural Institute in Istanbul (Director Dr. S. Schirmo). The performance, co-founded by ISMEO, is part of a two-year project funded by Bando “SEED PNR” (Prot. N. 88620 del 27/10/2021) promoted by the Ateneo Sapienza and supported by the Office Culture and Information of the Embassy of Türkiye in Rome (Director Dr Riza Haluk Söner). The project aims to disseminate the history of ancient civilizations by proposing an innovative approach. The proposed model is the Hittite civilization because it shows features of multiculturalism and inclusion. The main recipients of the proposal are young students of primary and secondary schools, but we also intend to involve all those who are interested in pre-classical civilizations. We have chosen a theatre representation with musical accompaniment, singing, and recitation in the Hittite language of literary passages from the Tale of Appu and the Myth of Telipinu. They have been represented in two ways: how we imagine they were performed in antiquity and how they can be adapted for today’s audience. For the first part of the performance, Francesco Landucci, a specialist in experimental archaeology and historical music instruments, reproduced some Hittite instruments based on the iconographic repertoires (Fig.1). He played a lyra and Dr. Matteo Vigo recited the passages in Hittite. For the second part of the performance, the same pieces were sung, in Hittite, by Burçu Bukem Kuru, a professional soprano, with the accompaniment of music composed by Zeinep Gümüş, a composer-pianist. In addition to the representation, we have conceived the creation of a comic featuring the god Telipinu as the protagonist (Fig.2).
