In the beginning of the Geographika, Strabo remembers the greatest migrations that had taken place in the past in order to highlight how the movements of people caused some relevant changes in the features of the Ecumene over time. This implies a strong link between the definition of the different geographical areas and the description of the people inhabiting them. Starting from these premises, my essay aims to enlighten the geographer’s historical perspective, with a focus on the mixing of ethnic groups in Mysia and Phrygia. Furthermore, while analyzing the geographer’s use of different traditions from the past, the essay investigates the role of memory in the definition of cultural identities, and thus ultimately Strabo’s concept of the relationship between the Greeks and the barbarians.

Abstract
In the beginning of the Geographika, Strabo remembers the greatest migrations that had taken place in the past in order to highlight how the movements of people caused some relevant changes in the features of the Ecumene over time. This implies a strong link between the definition of the different geographical areas and the description of the people inhabiting them. Starting from these premises, my essay aims to enlighten the geographer’s historical perspective, with a focus on the mixing of ethnic groups in Mysia and Phrygia. Furthermore, while analyzing the geographer’s use of different traditions from the past, the essay investigates the role of memory in the definition of cultural identities, and thus ultimately Strabo’s concept of the relationship between the Greeks and the barbarians.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
