A wide range of ancient sources (literary, archaeological, epigraphical) of different ages give us an increasing number of information about the evolution and the catachteristics of the gladiatorial games. In this paper, a selection of these sources will be used to draw a short story of the gladiators and their world in the Roman times, with a special focus on the different human senses (sight, smelling, taste, hearing and touch) involved in this overwhelming experience, that was not just a pure bloodshed.
