The following paper investigates the theoretical question how to identify difficult structures in a particular language. Nine parameters are postulated and discussed with reference to German, considering the lexical, morphosyntactic and textual level: linear order, continuity, formal structuring, semantic structuring, transparency, explicitness, univocity, frequency/markedness, productivity/regularity. Subsequently some highly difficult structures in German are highlighted (compounds, postpositions and future tenses).
