The Central Archaeological Area, despite recent updates regarding its governance and, above all, the assimilation of a broader concept of preservation that extends beyond the notion of historic centre to include the urban landscape and its geographical settings, continues to suffer from a long term paralysis that emphasizes the loss of meaning as a fragmentation both of its inner areas and of the limits facing the city. The result is an interruption in the urban landscape that creates uncertain conditions of use, identity and a widespread urban decay. In a situation where the asset of the archaeological core can’t even properly answer to its internal problems, the historical theme of the connections and relations between the cultural heritage and the city can’t further congest this space. The proposal searches a shift in the way we look to this landscape, a new perspective that defines and identifies a new urban subject as a threshold between the two different systems: this in-between space could work as new centrality, a new perspective that allows us to redefine hierarchies and focus on an approach that aims to an operative outcome. Those edges become a unique context to face peripheralizations issues and rebuild the conditions for a possible reconnection between the central areas and the historic city proposing itself as a new idea of urbanity. This general vision can’t follow the explicit need of an operative scale to overcome the actual immobility. An approach that works on two different scales aiming to disarticulate the traditional methods: a local dimension that looks to the urban context recovering the dross as significant of those areas, while identifying small, feasible themes and situations as space for the project; a wider, zenital, look that builds the system as a whole connecting this vision with the urban existing instruments and shows the edges as a landscape urban infrastructure.
