This article aims to analyse the numerous characters that populate the stage of Latin dramatic productions. The analysis – focusing mainly on comic texts, since they are better preserved than tragic ones – follows a diachronic line of enquiry through Attic theatrical productions (in particular those of Middle Comedy and New Comedy) to investigate their influence on the construction of the socalled stock-characters who appeared in plays from the time of Livius Andronicus and Naevius to that of Plautus and Terence.
