This volume aims to present the reconstruction of the urban evolution of the maritime district of ancient Ostia, based on the archaeological evidences that have emerged in over one hundred years of research and thanks to the application of the specially developed geographic information system (GIS). The information pertaining to the 52 Topographical Units identified in the district allowed the study of their diachronic development, distinguishing 16 phases: 13 phases of settlement continuity (from the 1st century B.C. to the 6th century A.D.), one phase of abandonment and two of destruction and robbery; the phases are summarized in 12 graphic tables. By cross-referencing the archaeological data with geo-archaeological data and literary sources it has been also possible to formulate some reconstructive hypotheses on the development of the ostian coastline. The history of excavations is also offered here: the antiquarian excavations of the XVIIIth century and the papal excavations of the XIXth century are illustrated, up to the archaeological excavations of the 20th century. The large-scale analytical approach, also thanks to the chronological extremes verified by the excavations undertaken in the course of the Ostia Marina Project investigations, allowed a renewed vision of the urban evolution of the maritime sector of the city. The information gathered has allowed for a diachronic reconstruction of the profound transformations that have occurred over the long life of the district outside Porta Marina, highlighting its dynamic nature in continuous evolution.

Abstract
The information gathered has allowed for a diachronic reconstruction of the profound transformations that have occurred over the long life of the district outside Porta Marina, highlighting its dynamic nature in continuous evolution.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
