The essay is dedicated to the pseudo-autobiographical novel by Aleksey Mikhailovich Remizov (1877-1957) Podstrizhennymi glazami (With Clipped Eyes). First published as a volume in 1951 in Paris, Podstrizhennymi glazami is one of the most surprising and significant works of the Russian emigrant writer. At the same time, it remains one of the most neglected pieces, with no monographic studies dedicated to it, even in Russia, to date. The essay focuses on the genre, genesis and reception of the text, exploring specific themes and motifs, such as memory and childhood. Defined as «the most original autobiography in Russian literature», Podstrizhennymi glazami can be considered the condensed expression of Remizov’s entire autofictional poetics and the key to understanding the writer’s complete creative work.
