Ernesto Buonaiuti is one of the most important scholars in the Italian culture of the early Twentieth century and founder of the historical studies on Christianity. The consideration on the "Buonaiuti case" is developed in the context of his relations with the Roman Curia during the 20-year fascist period. Buonaiuti was excommunicated three times (1921, 1924, 1926) and dismissed from his teaching at the University of Rome. In 1931 he was permanently dispensed from teaching as a result of his refusal to take the oath of fidelity to the Fascist Regime.
