Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries emerges a need to free logic of the problems related to the meanings of words. However, many logicians, though sharing this need, did not deny the existence of a connection between logic and knowledge. On the contrary, they took into account the sensitive constitution of humans, since their calculi modelled on algebra heavily relied on the sense of sight. At the same time, they did not neglect the search for a rational method of discovery, which they entrusted to logic, though they were aware that a wealth of cognitions in this field was to be found in the rhetorical tradition

Abstract
Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries emerges a need to free logic of the problems related to the meanings of words. However, many logicians, though sharing this need, did not deny the existence of a connection between logic and knowledge. On the contrary, they took into account the sensitive constitution of humans, since their calculi modelled on algebra heavily relied on the sense of sight. At the same time, they did not neglect the search for a rational method of discovery, which they entrusted to logic, though they were aware that a wealth of cognitions in this field was to be found in the rhetorical traditionI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
