With the publication of the fourth and final volume of The Government of the People, we conclude the long and demanding editorial journey that began in 2011 with the release of the first text in the series, dedicated to the genesis of the modern "semantics of the people" between the Old Regime and the Revolution, and continued in 2012 and 2014, with two further passages devoted respectively to the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century developments of this conceptual and discursive constellation. At the time when we began our research journey then, the mythopoetic character of the concept of the people and the instrumental and polemical use of its semantics could still have been classified among the products of a tragic season of twentieth-century politics, archived forever thanks to the inclusive power of a renewed form of democratic life. The verticist and authoritarian torsion underway in recent years even in some of the most advanced political-institutional systems of the globe have, however, allowed us to understand that the dark side of the 'politics of the people' represents an element consubstantial to the space of democratic experience born from the Revolutions of the late eighteenth century, as such always liable to be reactivated in the tumultuous political and social contexts that characterise our problematic present. This fourth volume therefore intends to contribute, also thanks to the conceptual approach that has characterised its overall course, to a deeper historical understanding of this constitutive ambivalence of modern politics and of the contradictory discursive and institutional dynamics that still today draw nourishment from it.

Abstract
This fourth volume therefore intends to contribute, also thanks to the conceptual approach that has characterised its overall course, to a deeper historical understanding of this constitutive ambivalence of modern politics and of the contradictory discursive and institutional dynamics that still today draw nourishment from it.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
