The essay offers a witness, based primarily on direct and review of some documentary references, methods and purposes of reuse in Rome and France in the Middle Ages. In Rome, in particular, the large presence of pre-existing ancient almost did not bring anything, except a few cases of recovery programmatic and policy during ancient as the tribune Cola di Rienzo, a reuse of the material of the past as a representative and symbolic. The recovery obeyed more frequently to economic reasons. On the ruins and with the materials of ancient buildings were built during the Middle Ages numerous artifacts in Rome. In such a context, ill the past it was mainly perceived as tradition and custom still present in everyday life: the ancient was rather an entity, a state, to aspire to, but also a memory that you could not understand a historical.
Il saggio offre una testimonianza, basata essenzialmente sull’analisi diretta e sulla rassegna di alcuni riferimenti documentari, delle modalità e delle finalità del reimpiego in Roma e in Francia nel medioevo. A Roma, in particolare, l’ingente presenza delle preesistenze antiche non comportò quasi mai, salvo alcuni casi di ripresa programmatica e politica dell’antico come durante il tribunato di Cola di Rienzo, un riuso del materiale del passato come dato rappresentativo e simbolico. Il recupero obbediva più frequentemente a ragioni di natura economica. Sui ruderi e con i materiali delle costruzioni antiche furono realizzati numerosi manufatti nel corso del medioevo a Roma. In un simile contesto, ill passato era soprattutto percepito come tradizione e consuetudine ancora presenti nel quotidiano; l’antico era piuttosto un’entità, uno stato, a cui aspirare, ma anche una memoria che non si riusciva a comprendere in chiave storica.
