This article begins with a historical overview of the concept and function of the model (De re aedificatoria of Leon Battista Alberti, Filarete to Scamozzi Philibert de L'Orme), defined as the intermediary phase between design concept and its implementation, from antiquity until today, considered in all its conceptual and physical aspects. Subsequently, the concept of the model as it functions in the digital age is discussed with the focus on virtualization and the possibility to pass from the virtual to the physical model (CAD-CAM, Rapid Prototyping). The potential of new technologies and the possibilities of perceiving and using the models obtained is also investigated. The last part of the article is devoted to the process of working out the virtual model of the dome of St. Peter analyzed from the phase of the survey to its final stage, in terms of a polygonal surface and the mathematical one. Several routes leading the realization of the model are the discussed, i.e. those in which only sofware is used for the management of point clouds as well as other methods that also start from the point cloud but then make use the construction sections and the discretization of the parts for the realization of the model. Considered also is the problem of texturing surfaces with high resolution photographs.

Abstract
Considered also is the problem of texturing surfaces with high resolution photographs.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
