The purpose of this paper is to study the oracular tale told by Hdt. at 1.174, which deals with the capitulation of Cnidus to the Medes in 545 BC. I argue that the story should be understood as a local tradition which was rewritten and adapted by Herodotus to his own moralizing goals. I also contend that the story was used by the Cnidians to underline their close relationship with Sparta and Delphi.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the oracular tale told by Hdt. at 1.174, which deals with the capitulation of Cnidus to the Medes in 545 BC. I argue that the story should be understood as a local tradition which was rewritten and adapted by Herodotus to his own moralizing goals. I also contend that the story was used by the Cnidians to underline their close relationship with Sparta and Delphi.File allegati a questo prodotto
