The essay attempts to fathom the specificities of this restorative discipline within the broader field of architectural composition, analysing the roles, methods and objectives of an activity organised to be the only methodological and operative device through which it is possible to act on pre-existing structures, to guarantee their conservation in view of their transmission to the future. An historical framework of the encounter of the old with, and for, the new is offered, starting from the principle of distinguishability of restorative action outlined by Camillo Boito, and ending with an analysis of the distinction between Critical Act and Creative Act made by Roberto Pane, who summarises in these terms the question of restoration in the years after World War II. Finally, the question of authenticity is also examined, posed by contemporary architecture also in terms of figurative compatibility
