Imaginary, Technology, and Social Change

Both technology and imaginary are powerful engines of social change. But how do they operate and, more importantly, how do they relate to each other? What are the most significant turning points of technological evolution and imaginary production that have marked our history, producing the basis for a new Great Social and Anthropological Transformation? The thesis argued in the essay is that an inversion has occurred in the relationship between the imaginary and the technical. Not only is the threshold between reality and the imaginary virtually abolished, but technique, in addition to being a product of the imaginary is now able to absorb, modify and produce it. The imaginary, which was once the realm of myth and gods, has now been transformed predominantly into the realm of technique, understood as a system that acts autonomously, and self-referentially transforming both the physical and imaginary aspects of the human, modifying the aisthesis and producing an enlargement (but also an amputation) of feeling and creating.

Sia la tecnica sia l’immaginario sono potenti motori del mutamento sociale. Ma in che modo operano e soprattutto in che relazione stanno fra loro? Quali sono le svolte più significative dell’evoluzione tecnologica e della produzione immaginaria che hanno scandito la nostra storia, producendo le basi per una nuova Grande Trasformazione sociale e antropologica? La tesi sostenuta nel saggio è che nel rapporto fra immaginario e tecnica si sia prodotta un’inversione. Non solo la soglia fra realtà e immaginario è virtualmente abolita, ma la tecnica, oltre a essere un prodotto dell’immaginario è ormai in grado di assorbirlo, di modificarlo e di produrlo. L’immaginario, che una volta era il regno del mito e degli dei, oggi si è trasformato prevalentemente nel regno della tecnica, intesa come un sistema che agisce autonomamente, e autoreferenzialmente trasformando sia gli aspetti fisici sia quelli immaginari dell’umano, modificando l’aisthesis e producendo un ampliamento (ma anche un’amputazione) del sentire e del creare.
