Abstract
Combining a peculiar structure with a multilayered process of compilation, the Shinsen Man’yōshū (Newly Compiled Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves) configures as an anthology whose interpretation and contextualization remain ar- guably tricky. This work was presumably compiled from 893 and based on the poems first presented at the poetry match sponsored by Emperor Uda’s mother (Kanpyō no ōntoki kisai no miya uta-awase). It brings together two volumes of more than two hundred uta, each matching a Sinitic verse (zekku). The dual na- ture of the anthology thus has made the thematic and aesthetic relationship bet- ween uta and shi a productive field of study. Less attention, however, has been paid to the role of the collection in shaping the position of uta within the socio- political environment of early Heian Japan. This paper explores the strategies of legitimation of uta at play in the preface to the first volume of Shinsen Man’yōshū, highlighting the rhetorical elements that contribute to validating the genre by in- voking a connection with the dominant practice of Sinitic poetry.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
