The information—financial and otherwise—has a double genesis: it can be produced directly by firms and financial intermediaries that are active on the market; it can be produced by third parties based on specific requests from operators; or it can be produced for regulatory and supervisory purposes. The environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings, scoring, and opinions produced by information providers constitute the focus of this chapter. There is a dialectical relationship between “in-house information” and information prepared by third parties; the latter, in fact, feeds on the former, just as “in-house information” is itself designed to represent a useful database for external information providers. This is also true for the ESG world.
