"Shakespeare at War: A Material History" is the first book to consider how Shakespeare was mobilized at times of great national crisis by focusing on overlooked archival objects. These objects, reproduced in the book, which doubles up as the companion to the 'Shakespeare and War' exhibition (National Army Museum, Oct 23 April 24), inflect our understanding of the history of the reception of Shakespeare during major conflict with a British involvement, from the English Civil Wars up to and including the Iraq War.
