The debate on the relationship between art and science today involves many design disciplines. Landscape architecture is conducting a debate on the relationship between aesthetics and ecology that overcomes this dichotomy by accepting the principle of contradiction to understand and enhance complexity and changes. The pioneers of ecology, Humboldt, Darwin, and Haeckel, chose to spread the new scientific discourse immediately through figurative and artistic expression, with significant reflections in the fine arts. Almost simultaneously, Olmsted, Alphand and others created the foundations of contemporary landscape architecture, introjected scientific thought, and shaped new urban ecologies.
