The aim of this essay is to reflect on the relationship, in Late Antiquity and in the Middle Ages, between the street and the church in Rome. The question will not be approached in terms of ecclesiastical topography and the Christianisation of the urban landscape – topics already covered in an excellent manner by many other scholars – but by focusing on the physical and material relationship between road- and church-building and, therefore, also bearing in mind issues of communication, functionality and liturgy.

Abstract
The aim of this essay is to reflect on the relationship, in Late Antiquity and in the Middle Ages, between the street and the church in Rome. The question will not be approached in terms of ecclesiastical topography and the Christianisation of the urban landscape – topics already covered in an excellent manner by many other scholars – but by focusing on the physical and material relationship between road- and church-building and, therefore, also bearing in mind issues of communication, functionality and liturgy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
