In this chapter, we illustrate the status of the wolf in Europe and provide an argument for conserving wolves at a pan-European scale. We urgently call for a population-level management strategy to guide the development and implementation of conservation actions at national scales. In this perspective, we emphasize the critical need to integrate policy and socio-economic drivers with ecological science.

Abstract

In this chapter, we illustrate the status of the wolf in Europe and provide an argument for conserving wolves at a pan-European scale. We urgently call for a population-level management strategy to guide the development and implementation of conservation actions at national scales. In this perspective, we emphasize the critical need to integrate policy and socio-economic drivers with ecological science.
