Since the birth of capitalism and then socialism, we see the coexistence of two economic models: the free market model and its variants, and the socialist planning model also with its own forms, such as market socialism. This is contrasted with the more restrictive form of the capitalist model, which is the neo-liberal model that has characterised recent decades. The contradiction between market rules and a dignied way of life for citizens and workers cannot be resolved within the market mechanisms imposed by neo-liberal policies. Abstract

Since the birth of capitalism and then socialism, we see the coexistence of two economic models: the free market model and its variants, and the socialist planning model also with its own forms, such as market socialism. The main idea is that the market is not an exclusively capitalist mechanism and that it helps to mix the advantages of socialism with those of economic liberalism. This is contrasted with the more restrictive form of the capitalist model, which is the neo-liberal model that has characterised recent decades. When there is talk even for Italian capitalism of privatising energy, transport, schools, health, water, and local services, one can easily understand the consequences for workers, the unemployed, citizens, and all low-income people. But local involvement in political life is also at risk. Soon the demands for a broader democracy will also become conictual. The contradiction between market rules and a dignied way of life for citizens and workers cannot be resolved within the market mechanisms imposed by neo-liberal policies. A wild, lawless, prot-oriented capitalism that devastates employment and the quality of life in general cannot be accepted.
