The article aims to provide a new hypothesis about the meaning and the origin of MPers. Inscr. plky and Parth. Inscr. plk recorded in the inscription of the Sasanian king Narseh at Pāikūlī. These words have been regarded as loanwords from a Middle Indian continuant of Skt. pīṭha- ‘stool, pedestal, royal seat’. In this paper I suggest that both terms actually come from Akkadian parakku and should therefore be read parag instead of pillag and translated as ‘altar, throne’ rather than ‘marche, degré’ or ‘monument’.
