Per lo studio dei graffiti medievali. Caratteri, categorie, esempi.

The essay, written version of the intervention presented at the XXIII Seminary residential studies organized by the Centre for Studies on the civilization of the Late Middle Ages ( San Miniato , 7-10 September 2009), dedicated to epigraphic sources and writings exposed, investigates a type of source epigraphic very little known and explored by detecting the specific characters and illustrating the vast array of categories including through the publication of an extensive series of testimonies mostly unpublished. The work emphasizes the importance of graffiti as a free form of historical knowledge, from history of mentality to that of climate or natural events , from the world of marginal to that of the powerful, detects its usefulness in the study of the spread of literacy and the social use of the language as it unfolds daily, highlights next to the multitude of testimonies degraded a number, small but not insignificant, graffiti showing an appreciable adherence to the rules of writing. In short, a pressing invitation to retrieve a source hitherto almost ignored .

Il saggio, versione scritta dell’intervento presentato in occasione del XXIII Seminario residenziale di studi organizzato dalla Fondazione Centro Studi sulla Civiltà del Tardo Medioevo (San Miniato, 7-10 settembre 2009), dedicato a Fonti epigrafiche e scritture esposte indaga una tipologia di fonte epigrafica assai poco conosciuta e esplorata rilevandone gli specifici caratteri e illustrandone il vasto campionario di categorie anche attraverso la pubblicazione di una ricca serie di testimonianze per lo più inedite. Il lavoro sottolinea l’importanza dei graffiti come libera forma di conoscenza storica, dalla storia della mentalità a quella del clima o degli eventi naturali, dal mondo dei marginali a quello dei potenti, ne rileva l’utilità nello studio della diffusione dell’alfabetismo e dell’uso sociale della lingua nel suo svolgersi quotidiano, mette in luce accanto alla moltitudine di testimonianze degradate un numero, esiguo ma non insignificante, di graffiti che mostrano un’apprezzabile adesione alla norma grafica. Insomma un invito pressante a recuperare una fonte finora quasi ignorata.
