This contribution reports the results of research activities focused on the study of contemporary lines of intervention directing energy choices towards solutions compatible with cultural heritage. Starting from the selection and critical interpretation of numerous case studies, distributed over thirty years, from the early 1990s to today, the contribution outlines a framework of the evolution of intervention methods for the integration of solar technologies in historical buildings. The aim of the research work is to extract from good practices invariant and variable (morphological, typological, technological) factors determining an effective integration of solar technologies in historical buildings. Final objective is to contribute to the development of directions and guidelines which, at the local level, can help authorities in governing the expected growth of diffuse renewable energy plants, in compliance with the European and national energy and climate objectives (Climate Law; PNIEC).
