Abstract
The Molise region – the main part of the ancient area of the Samnium – has been characterised by frequent boundary shifts and name changes since Roman times. Until the second half of the XXI Century, this territory has been split between different political administrations, as a consequence of the particular civic condition it went through. Studies concerning the ancient and medieval road system show few evidences. However, the system of tratturi remained almost unvaried through Centuries. This system of paths connecting the inland, probably established during the pre-roman Samnite period, was used for sheep-rearing and to develop trading with neighbouring regions. The road network, the physical landscape and the different natural resources influenced the urban and architectural development. In this complex area, the constructive techniques of structures in three urban places in the southern part of the Samnium – Campobasso, Ferrazzano and Bojano - were studied. Even if the research is still in progress, the analysed examples certainly show constructive influences from surrounding areas. However, the characteristics of the territory, the resources and the particular incidence of seismic actions, have contributed to an adaptation and diversification of masonries. A similar attitude is evident in the use of special elements. The general reuse of rubble can shed some light on the post-earthquake reconstruction phases, characterised by the need to operate quickly and with limited economic resources. Moreover, the insertion of some devices to reinforce structures and to relieve forces is the result of the practical commitment to building criteria.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
