The research is part of a study on the architecture of theaters and places of entertainment, to deepen transformations and developments between the nineteenth and twentieth century, in Italy and internationally. The study deepens contexts, needs and experiences that have determined, between nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a radical and significant formal and technical revolution in the field of theatrical representation and related architectural spaces. The themes dealt with are different: from the evolution of the nineteenth-century European theaters, in their social, political and architectural events, to the twentieth-century innovations that often involved changes in the systems-technological systems; from the insertion of new functions linked to an unprecedented expression of art, such as the cinema. Attention was also paid to issues concerning the restoration and enhancement of Italian historical theaters. The paper analyzes also the current situation and the recent interventions for the recovery, restoration and enhancement of such structures for the representation, often subject to tampering, transformations, functional updates that have compromised the specific testimonial and expressive prerogatives. Today many of these structures, now deprived of their original function, have lost the urban and public role of reference that characterized them; now fallen and, often, subject of endless litigation, these are demolished or denied, and, at best, altered as exclusive consumer products linked to casual market needs. The contribution, which is based on the deepening of current knowledge on the subject, intends to look more closely at the subject, which takes account of the complexity of aspects related to the functional transformation and adaptation of these structures. Verify the current case studies of use that, from a first survey, seems to move between operations of restoration, adaptation, re-use, modification and innovation. Through some Italian and international experiences, we want to present some exemplary cases that well exemplify the different problems related to the updating of these structures.

Abstract
Through some Italian and international experiences, we want to present some exemplary cases that well exemplify the different problems related to the updating of these structures.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
