From chaos to chaos. Janus in fasti 1 and the gates of war

The articole offers an insight of the character of Janus in Ovid's first book of the Fasti. Janus is a pacifier god, but peace is not a stable condition, since elements of conflict always remain, as evidence of the risk of coming back into chaos. Furthermore, Janus is gradually losing his power in favour of Augustus. This finds confirm also in the image of the gates of Janus' shrine, which were closed in time of peace: the Ovidian reading of this event stresses the frailty of this condition.

Il lavoro analizza l'esordio del primo libro dei Fasti di Ovidio, interpretando la figura di Giano come un dio pacificatore ma non pacificato, in quanto mantiene in sé i germi del conflitto e della degenerazione nel chaos, e che perde gradualmente potere in favore dell'imperatore; se ne trova conferma nel rito della chiusura delle porte del suo tempio in tempo di pace, che nella lettura ovidiana dimostrano la fragilità di quest'ultima e la difficoltà di preservarla.
