Motivation is a key to successful language learning. In the European Union with its 23 official languages a knowledge of two languages besides one's mother tongue is simply "a must". In Italy, compared to other Europeans, the knowledge of languages other than Italian is below average. This result is not surprising given the lack of concern with multilingualism on the part of Italian policy makers. Motivating young people and students to learn languages depends often on language teachers and language teaching organizers. Founded on the first results of research on motivation funded by the European Commission, this papers deals with how the language teaching staff of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" has been motivating its students to learn more languages and improve the ones they had already acquired at school.

Abstract
Motivation is a key to successful language learning. In the European Union with its 23 official languages a knowledge of two languages besides one's mother tongue is simply "a must". In Italy, compared to other Europeans, the knowledge of languages other than Italian is below average. This result is not surprising given the lack of concern with multilingualism on the part of Italian policy makers. Motivating young people and students to learn languages depends often on language teachers and language teaching organizers. Founded on the first results of research on motivation funded by the European Commission, this papers deals with how the language teaching staff of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" has been motivating its students to learn more languages and improve the ones they had already acquired at school.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
